Krystine Rice - May 2015

3DPT NAMES KRYSTINE RICE PATIENT OF THE MONTH FOR MAY 2015

3DPT: Tell us a little about your injury and the surgery that you had.

KRYSTINE: I had a stretched out UCL and my ulnar nerve would every time my arm went into the throwing motion. The surgery I had for my nerve was Ulnar nerve transposition which involved them moving my nerve permanently. I also had tommy john (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction). When I got the surgery I was told the rehab was going to be 10-12 months and I would have to red shirt for my senior season.

3DPT: What was the most difficult part of going through the rehabilitation?

KRYSTINE: The most difficult part was the first 4 months not being able to do anything. Finally at month 3 I got some faith and was told that there was a good chance I could come back and play at the 6 month mark. But not being able to put my hair up for 2 months and relying on others to do almost everything was really difficult.

Krystine Rice 3DPT: Did you ever think that you weren't going to play softball again?

KRYSTINE: When I woke up from surgery and saw both of my arms wrapped I thought, yep I’m done, I’m never playing again. Then over dramatic me came to my senses and realized I was fine, I think the drugs got to me. I joked with Ken at times because the process seemed like it was taking forever but I knew he wasn’t gonna let me down.

3DPT: How did your arm feel this year playing compared to before the Tommy John surgery?

KRYSTINE: It felt 100 times better. Last year I would be in tears every time I threw the ball and this year my arm was stiff every now and then, but it was never in pain and I never felt the tingling from the nerve that I felt last year.

3DPT: What's your favorite pregame meal?

KRYSTINE: I’d have to say a Wawa hoagie and strawberries.

3DPT: Who is the biggest smoke show in MLB?

KRYSTINE: Definitely Mike Trout, but Bryce Harper isn’t too bad.
