What made you decide to pursue Physical Therapy as a career?
When I was in 7th grade, I heard a classmate yell across the recess yard to her friend, “Why are you talking to the ‘fat kid’?”. At that moment, I realized I needed to make some changes in my life. I became immersed in every health and wellness magazine I could find and completely changed my lifestyle and viewpoint on human movement. In the process of losing weight, I gained control of my life. I wanted to help others gain the same self-confidence and independence as a career. My undergraduate academic adviser (Dr. Craig Stevens) challenged me to look into Physical Therapy. After a period of shadowing local PT’s, I realized I enjoyed the challenge of the profession but I really loved how I could help others regain control of their life.

What do you feel are the key attributes for a Physical Therapist?
I believe that the top three traits of a Physical Therapist are as follows:

  • Empathy: Great physical therapists empathize with the life-altering effect of pain. Empathy allows PTs to shift their perspective and adapt their treatment plan according to the patient’s situation.
  • Lead By Example: In order to tell a patient to do a particular exercise or stretch for “3 sets of 10”, PTs should have experienced the same regiment in their own life to understand the time constraints, the discomfort and the aftermath of their prescribed home programs.
  • Lifetime Student: In order to improve, great PTs take the time to reflect on areas where they are lacking. They stay current with the research and constantly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their care.
What are your interests outside of work?
I spend a lot of time in the gym. I’d like to compete in a power lifting or an Olympic lifting meet by the age of 30. I also really enjoy traveling. My lifetime goal is to eat a meal in all 50 states (I have 11 so far) and visit New Zealand, Iceland and Italy.
