What is a Board Certified Physical Therapist?

Board Certified Physical Therapists are:

  • Highly skilled
  • Have more accurate clinical diagnosis skills
  • Possess advanced manual therapy skills (especially Sports and Orthopedic specialists)
  • Have additional Postdoctoral Training and Education
For you, this means better care and better results in fewer treatment sessions.

How does a Physical Therapist achieve and maintain Board Certification?

To become Board Certified, a Physical Therapist completes a one year residency program, or completes 2,000 hours of work in that specialty. There are criteria specific to each specialty area that must be met before taking the board examination. This occurs after completing both a four year Bachelor's degree program and a three year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. To maintain this certification, Physical Therapists need to stay up to date on the latest breakthroughs and treatment approaches. The ABPTS (American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists) has strict requirements for Board Certified PT’s to renew their certifications.

Why would a PT go through that extra work?

This answer differs therapist to therapist, but for me personally, the answer was clear. I want to be able to provide the best care to my patients, develop the most accurate clinical diagnosis, have advanced manual therapy training, and get my patients better in fewer visits.
