LSVT BIG Therapy: A Treatment Protocol for Patient’s with Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s Disease is a motor system disorder that currently affects over 1 million Americans. Approximately 60,000 American’s are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year. Parkinson’s Disease is a result of a loss of dopamine containing neurons within the brain leading to several motor disorders including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), hypokinesia (decreased movement) and postural instability. These symptoms lead to loss of balance, decreased ability to walk and talk, and increased risk of falling. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease but there is a newer therapy treatment protocol that helps directly fight the movement impairments for people with Parkinson’s disease. That treatment protocol is called LSVT BIG.

What is LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is a treatment protocol specifically designed to fight the pathophysiologic mechanisms of bradykinesia and hypokinesia. Formed from the principals of LSVT LOUD, a voice therapy protocol, LSVT BIG is an amplitude specific training protocol that focuses on improving movement size, speed, and accuracy through intense practice and multiple repetitions of everyday functional movements. The movements used are functional and common with the ultimate goal of improving movement perception. Research on LSVT BIG has demonstrated improved motor function in people with Parkinson’s disease following treatment. Improvements include: faster walking with bigger steps, improved balance, increased trunk rotation, decrease risk of falling, and overall increased quality of life.

What does the protocol entail?
LSVT BIG is delivered by a physical or occupational therapist that is trained and certified in this protocol. Treatment is administered in 16 sessions over a single month. The first half of each session focuses on multiple repetitions of large movements and the remainder of each session focuses on doing functional movements with that “bigness effort” (getting out of bed, putting on a coat, or going from sit to stand). As the patient progresses through the program, difficulty and intensity is increased. The protocol is specifically designed for each individual patient’s needs and goals.

Why Should I Try LSVT BIG:

  • Improve your balance and decrease your risk of falling
  • Walk with greater confidence
  • Return to the activities you love and care about

Concussion Management

ct scanThe therapists at 3DPT are proficient in treating patients who have suffered a concussion. football tackleThis treatment will assess balance, dizziness, and any other musculoskeletal problems associated with the injury. When indicated, 3DPT will then follow a 5-step return to activity protocol in which they are carefully monitored to ensure that there is no increase in symptoms as they move through each phase.

Running Video Analysis

Running VideoIt is estimated that more than 70% of runners will be injured each year, with the majority of these injuries resulting from overuse. Overuse injuries occur when the body is unable to handle the stress that is placed on healthy tissue, causing it to fail and become painful. Once you have developed pain it is critical to figure out the reason why that particular tissue failed. If the injury is treated only with rest, it will eventually feel better, but if the cause of the injury is not addressed, the injury likely will return or manifest itself somewhere else. You may be surprised to discover that the cause of your discomfort is far away from the location of the pain.

At 3DPT we will videotape your running form, utilizing software that helps us to analyze your running form in slow motion. This enables us to break down each phase of the running cycle and identify imbalances that may be causing your injury. We will combine the information gained from the video analysis with the information we gain from a comprehensive physical exam and identify the deficiencies that will allow us to come up with a treatment plan. The execution of this plan will lead you towards recovery and getting back out on the roads pain free.

Throwing Assessment

3DPT has developed a functional assessment unique to throwing sports to test the needs of the body and determine risk of injury as well as potential areas that could be improved to maximize performance. Throwing is a dynamic action that combines leg, arm, and trunk movements in a coordinated pattern. Weakness or limited mobility in one area can lead to pain and injury, in addition to poor performance on the field.

Research Study

3DPT has developed a functional assessment unique to throwing sports which tests the needs of the body during the throwing motion. This will help to identify athletes who are at increased risk of injury. 3DPT will combine the results of the assessment with video analysis of the throwing motion to build an exercise program to minimize risk of injury and maximize performance. This functional baseball assessment is being validated through a research study in conjunction with the Rothman Institute.

The study consists of comparing results of a functional movement assessment uniquely designed around the needs of the throwing athlete between injured and healthy athletes.  If you are or are a parent of a high school baseball player, and would like to enroll in the study, please Click Here to contact us.

Golf Swing Analysis

golf swingSwing faults may exist, not because of a technical problem, but because of a flexibility or a strength problem. The therapists are 3DPT are certified as golf fitness instructors by the Titleist Performance Institute (, considered the leaders in golf-specific health and fitness. Our therapists will record your golf swing and analyze it for swing faults utilizing slow motion and video analysis software.

swingThe therapist will also perform an evidence based, head to toe evaluation that will assess flexibility and strength at key joints and muscles that have an influence on the golf swing. We will then devise a plan to correct the physical problem so that the swing fault has a chance to resolve.
