Jill
Jill started physical therapy at 3DPT Cinnaminson following a surgical labral repair of her shoulder after having multiple dislocations throughout her life. The first day Dr. Brooke Chisholm met Jill during her evaluation, she came to the appointment with her husband – this was partially for support, and partially because she could not drive yet. Jill found that first appointment really tough because she felt a lot of fear and anxiety around allowing the shoulder to move. Whether it was active or passive, Jill felt safer and more comfortable keeping the shoulder at her side. That first day, her passive shoulder flexion measured at only 10 degrees.
Over the next few weeks, as a patient and therapist team, Jill and Brooke worked on building trust. They had open and honest conversations about what they needed to accomplish during each session, and Jill did an awesome job of discussing her anxiety with the appropriate medical professionals. Her ability to address and acknowledge the anxiety was fundamental in her recovery process.
Jill has worked diligently over the past few months to gain her function back. Brooke has watched her confidence and joy in movement grow exponentially over this time. She no longer has fear of movement in the shoulder and is now working on a functional strengthening program to get her back to where she used to be – a fitness instructor, full time mom, and part time DIY home renovator.

1. Tell us about what brought you to physical therapy and how this has affected your life.
I had subluxations of the shoulder multiple times over a 25 year period, as I aged the shoulder took longer to slip back into the socket. Over the years I had learned to become a bit protective of my shoulder. Finally, I dislocated the shoulder while lifting weights overhead. This caused a labrum tear that I needed surgery to have fixed. Over the course of the injury and surgery I lost nearly all range of motion. I came to physical therapy post-op to regain my range of motion and use of my arm/shoulder.
2. Tell us a little about your recovery process. What has been the hardest part of your therapy? What was your favorite part of physical therapy?
My recovery process has been a journey. I developed anxiety during the immobilization phase that prevented me from doing passive exercises or even getting off the sofa for long periods of time. This anxiety continued into the early stages of physical therapy, with times when I would end up glued to the sofa again. I always loved going to physical therapy though, my anxiety would disappear while I was at 3DPT. I received help for my anxiety and slowly gained range of motion back. The anxiety was the hardest part of my therapy.
My favorite part of physical therapy has been the amazing therapists. They get to know all of the patients, whether you have sessions with them or not. They are also very supportive and fun! Brooke has been fundamental in my recovery. With support, gentle pressure, and plenty of whining from me, she has greatly helped rebuild me.
3. What advice would you give to other people going through the same situation?
If you develop anxiety like I did, ask your primary doctor for help sooner rather than later. Once allowed to, move your affected arm! Even if it’s small amounts, try to use the arm.
4. Share a fun fact about yourself!
I am a fitness instructor. Even with that background, I struggled with this injury recovery. Give yourself some grace, continue persevering, and celebrate the little wins.
