Matthew

A few years ago, Matthew Konopka was diagnosed with a rare, complex, autoimmune disorder known as Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). CIPD attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds nervous system cells in the peripheral nervous system. There are still many questions regarding CIPD. Some experts believe it to be related or similar to Guillain-Barre-syndrome (GBS). Although similar, one major difference between GBS and CIPD is that GBS is more acute in nature, while CIPD has long term effects with bouts of “relapse” of worsening symptoms.

Matt has shown great resilience and determination despite the challenges of his disease and always brings a positive attitude to the clinic each and every day, making him our choice for December’s Patient of the month! Given the diagnosis of CIPD, it is easy to express frustration and disinterest for physical therapy, however Matt works very hard through his deficits so that he can continue doing the things he loves; which include: cooking extravagant meals for his family and loved ones, enjoying life with his lovely wife, and traveling to different craft breweries in the area.
(P.S. It is said, you may never see Matt and Santa Claus in the same room 🎅😉)

Here’s what Matt had to say about his PT experience at 3DPT Haddon Heights:

Tell us about what brought you to physical therapy and how this affected your life.
About 7-8 years ago, I began losing strength in my left leg. I also began having balance and mobility issues. The first neurologist I saw told me I’d be in a wheelchair in 5 years, with a diagnosis of CIDP, a complex autoimmune disease.

I began PT at nearby clinics with mixed results. I switched to 3DPT in Haddon Heights about a year ago. The therapists there are outstanding, they made a serious effort to learn about my condition and together we work on all the practices I need to stay strong.

I’m not in a wheelchair, and with the help of the 3D staff, I feel I never will be!

What has been the hardest part of your therapy?  What was your favorite part of physical therapy?
Balance and gait training are the hardest parts of recovery, because it seems I’m in a constant battle not to lose my mobility, and I now know I need to work on it every day.

The Open Book exercise is one of my favorite PT activities as it works on my core and keeps my hips flexible.

What advice would you give to other people who suffered similar injuries or going through the same situation?
You really need to learn as much as possible about your condition and be your own advocate. No one understands what’s happening to your body better than you.

I found an online support group where I can discuss my symptoms with others going through a similar situation which has helped!

Why would you recommend 3 Dimensional Physical Therapy to your friends?
The first thing I noticed coming here that it’s a large, open comfortable space with modern equipment, but that pales in comparison to the amazing and friendly people there, from Julie & Danielle at the front desk, to my amazing PT team: Jess, Brian, Christina, Elena and Lauren, Jeremy, Lauren and Gabby.

The most important thing about my 3D experience is that we work together to get me better. They won’t let me fail! Coming to the clinic is something I look forward to every week.

What are you most looking forward to for the holidays?
I look forward to spending time with my family & friends. My wife & I enjoy all the Christmas traditions and decked out places in our area. And thanks, to 3DPT, I’ll be able to enjoy them
