Sebastian
Sebastian came to 3DPT Medford after sustaining tears in both of his hip labrums, a serious injury that left him barely able to walk and forced him to pause his Ironman training. As a world-class endurance athlete, Sebastian was used to pushing his body to its limits, but this setback brought a different kind of challenge.
A hip labral tear involves damage to the ring of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint socket. This cartilage helps cushion and stabilize the joint, and when it’s torn, it can cause sharp pain, stiffness, and a feeling of the hip catching or locking. For high-level athletes like Sebastian, this type of injury can significantly affect movement, power, and overall performance.
For our Medford team, working with Sebastian has been nothing short of inspiring. His commitment to doing every exercise correctly, his eagerness to learn, and his ability to laugh through the process made every session enjoyable. He quickly became a favorite around the clinic, always lifting the spirits of the staff and other patients. Sebastian was chosen as Patient of the Month not only for his impressive progress in recovery but for the contagious positivity and resilience he brought into the clinic every single day. His journey is a reminder that true strength is not just physical but the mindset to keep going no matter how long the road back may be.
Throughout his time in physical therapy, Sebastian’s attitude stood out just as much as his athletic background. From day one, he brought energy, patience, and a sense of humor to every session. Even on the toughest days, when progress felt slow or the exercises were challenging, Sebastian approached each movement with focus and determination. His positive mindset created an environment that motivated not only himself but also those around him. It was clear that his Ironman mentality of discipline, perseverance, and mental toughness was carrying him through the rehab process one step at a time.
Sebastian shared how his rehab experience shaped his mindset and helped him get back to what he loves:
1. Tell us about what brought you to physical therapy and how this has affected your life.
I tore both of my hip labrums, left and right, and reached a point where I could barely walk. I had to completely stop sports, which had a huge impact on me because endurance training is a big part of my life.
I used to compete as a world-class Ironman athlete, including racing in Kona at the Ironman World Championship. Not being able to train or compete anymore was not only physically challenging but also mentally very difficult. Having to press pause on something that means so much to me was one of the hardest parts of this journey.
2. Tell us a little about your recovery process. What has been the hardest part of your therapy? What was your favorite part of physical therapy?
The hardest part of my recovery is accepting that it takes time. I am still in the recovery process and can’t return to Ironman training yet, especially running, for several more months. Patience has not been easy, but it’s part of the process.
My favorite part of 3DPT has been the amazing team. Everyone is friendly, supportive, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. I look forward to going because it feels like being with family, I even joke that they see me more than my actual family! Even with all the fun and positive energy, the professionalism at 3D is outstanding. Each therapist brings something unique to the table. With any type of injury, I would recommend 3D without hesitation.
3. What advice would you give to other people who suffered similar injuries or going through the same situation?
Don’t give up: be committed to rehab and put in the extra work at home. The guidance from the 3D team and their app gives you everything you need to support your recovery outside the clinic. At the same time, remember that serious injuries and surgery take time to heal. Trust the process, trust the professionals, stay patient, and stay consistent.
4. Share a fun fact, bucket list item, or goal you want to reach!
My biggest goal during rehab was to be strong enough to hold and care for my newborn daughter when she arrived, and I achieved it. I planned the surgery so I would be able to support my wife and hold my baby girl in my arms when she was born (and yes… change diapers, too!). That moment meant everything.
Fun Fact: I’m German, but I love humor and joking around! I’m definitely not the “typical serious German potato.” Also… I really love raccoons and would love to adopt and domesticate one someday!
