Will
Will is a local high school baseball player whose athletic career was put on hold by a significant shoulder injury at exactly the wrong time. When he first began physical therapy, the road ahead looked challenging. He had significant limitations in his range of motion due to pain and stiffness, along with several functional deficits. Most notably, he presented with severe scapular winging, weakness and poor control of his serratus anterior, and very limited scapular coordination — all critical for an athlete whose sport demands so much from the shoulder.
But Will got to work, and the results have been remarkable.
Since beginning therapy, he has made significant strides: minimal scapular winging, improved scapular control and coordination, and greater rotator cuff strength and stability. Watching him rebuild his motion, strength, and confidence has been one of the most rewarding parts of his care. Because returning an athlete to their sport isn’t just physical, it’s about helping them trust their body again.
Here’s what Will had to say about rehab and time at 3DPT Newark:
1. Tell us about what brought you to physical therapy and how this has affected your life.
I tore my labrum playing baseball for my high school, leading me to miss the rest of my spring and summer season. This made my summer boring and bland but set a clear goal for me as I return to playing baseball.
2. Tell us a little about your recovery process. What has been the hardest part of your therapy? What was your favorite part of physical therapy?
The hardest part of physical therapy for me was the first week of actual therapy. I had to learn some new exercises, and it could be painful at times, but since then it has been smooth sailing
3. What advice would you give to other people going through the same situation?
Don’t try to come back as quick as possible. This can lead to re-injury and make your current situation even worse than it already is.
4. Share a fun fact, item on your bucket list, or a goal you want to reach!
I want to start hitting again by early October.
