Why I became an Occupational Therapist
I became an occupational therapist after a moment in high school that left a lasting impression on me. As a sophomore, I saw a commercial for a children’s hospital that featured children with disabilities participating in everyday activities such as playing basketball and walking up steps. One child in particular stood out to me—a boy without arms who was drawing with his feet. His smile radiated confidence and pride, and it inspired me to help others reclaim their independence and sense of accomplishment.
After learning more about the profession, I realized occupational therapy aligned perfectly with my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My clinical experience in hand therapy during grad school further strengthened my passion for OT and inspired me to pursue hand therapy as a focus in my professional career.
