Do I Need Occupational Therapy for Hand Pain?

Occupational therapists, who specialize in hand therapy, focus on restoring upper extremity function for maximum independence in everyday activities.

Treatment may include:

  • Customized exercise program to improve strength and mobility
  • Manual techniques to reduce pain and stiffness
  • Splinting or bracing to improve positioning and allow healing
  • Education on activity modification, joint conservation techniques and ergonomics
  • Guidance for safe return to work, hobbies, and sports

What Causes Hand Pain?

Hand pain can come from a variety of conditions, including:

  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • Post-surgical recovery

Because the hand is made up of many small joints, tendons, and nerves, even minor issues can have a big impact on function.

When Should You See an Occupational Therapist?

You may benefit from occupational therapy if:

You notice weakness, stiffness, or decreased motion:
Loss of grip strength or limited movement can lead to long-term issues if left untreated.

You experience numbness or tingling:
This may indicate nerve involvement, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome, and should be addressed early.
