Experiencing numbness or tingling in your upper extremity can be uncomfortable—and sometimes concerning. Whether it comes and goes or feels constant, these sensations are often your body’s way of signaling that something isn’t functioning properly.
The good news? In many cases, hand numbness and tingling can be treated effectively—especially when addressed early.
What Are Some Causes of Numbness or Tingling?
1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
One of the most common causes of hand numbness – carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist.
Common symptoms include:
- Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger
- Symptoms that worsen at night
- Weakness or difficulty gripping objects
- Clumsiness with manipulating small objects
2. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
This condition involves compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow.
You may notice:
- Tingling in the ring and small fingers
- Symptoms when your elbow is bent (like when using your phone or sleeping)
- Hand weakness or clumsiness
- Weakness with gripping objects
3. Pinched Nerve in the Neck
Sometimes the issue doesn’t start in the hand at all. Nerves that originate in the neck can become compressed, leading to symptoms that travel down the arm.
Signs may include:
- Tingling that radiates from the neck or shoulder into the hand
- Pain or stiffness in the neck
- Symptoms that change with head or neck movement
4. Overuse or Repetitive Strain
Frequent use of your hands—especially for typing, texting, or manual work—can irritate surrounding tissues and nerves.
5. Other Medical Conditions
Less commonly, numbness and tingling may be related to:
- Diabetes
- Arthritis
- Poor circulation
How Can Hand Therapy Help?
Occupational therapists and Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs) are trained to evaluate and treat conditions affecting the upper extremity.
Treatment may include:
- Customized splinting to relieve pressure on nerves
- Targeted exercises to improve strength, mobility and fine motor coordination
- Nerve gliding techniques
- Education on posture and activity modification
The goal is to reduce symptoms, restore function, and help you return to your daily activities without pain or limitation.
