Week 6 Injury Report: Bilal Nichols—Overcoming the Sting, Ready to Roar!

Bilal Nichols, the defensive lineman for the Arizona Cardinals, faced a challenging setback during Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers when he sustained a stinger injury. Nichols, known for his powerful presence on the field and crucial role in the Cardinals’ defensive line, experienced this injury, which is quite common in football.

Stinger injuries, often referred to as burner injuries, occur due to a rapid stretch of the neck or shoulder, leading to tension or compression of nerve roots, peripheral nerves, or parts of the brachial plexus—a critical network of nerves that serves the upper extremities. Symptoms of a stinger include sharp, burning pain radiating down the arm, numbness or tingling, and discomfort in the neck or shoulder. This type of injury typically occurs during tackles, particularly when a player’s shoulder is forced one way while their head and neck are pulled in the opposite direction.

For Nichols, the implications of a stinger injury can be significant. While the immediate symptoms can be intense, they usually fall under the category of neurapraxia, the least severe form of nerve injury. Neurapraxia involves the compression of small nerve fibers without permanent damage, somewhat akin to the sensation of hitting your “funny bone.” Although symptoms may not last long, the recovery timeline can vary based on the extent of the injury. In some cases, if the injury escalates to axonotmesis or neurotmesis, the implications for Nichols could be more serious. Axonotmesis affects peripheral nerves while keeping deeper axons intact, while neurotmesis signifies complete severing of the nerve, resulting in a much longer recovery process.

As Nichols embarks on his rehabilitation journey, the early phase of treatment will focus on pain management through light postural strengthening exercises and nerve glides. These exercises gently stretch the affected nerve while relieving tension on the opposite end, aimed at reducing pain and promoting healing. Once Nichols begins to experience pain relief, therapists will introduce nerve tensioners that apply tension to both ends of the nerve, increasing its tolerance to stretching. In the later stages of rehab, higher-level upper body exercises will be essential for Nichols to build strength and stability, ensuring that he can safely return to the field without risking a recurrence of symptoms.

In a helpful video, Dr. Sarah Obuchowski from 3DPT West Berlin provides valuable insights and demonstrations of these rehabilitation techniques.

For athletes like Nichols, understanding the nature of stinger injuries and following a comprehensive rehab protocol will be crucial not only for recovery but also for a successful return to competitive play. With the right care and attention, Nichols can hope to bounce back quickly and continue to make an impact on the Cardinals’ defense.
