Week 18 Injury Report: Silver Linings… Cowboys’ Season Ends, But Edoga Gets a Toe-Up on Recovery

The Dallas Cowboys’ elimination from playoff contention is undoubtedly a disappointment for the team and its fans. However, for offensive tackle Chuma Edoga, the early offseason presents a valuable opportunity to rest and recover from a lingering toe injury that has plagued him since Week 1.

Details on the specifics of Edoga’s injury have not been released, though it appears to be relatively mild, likely falling into the Grade I or II category. This indicates mild to moderate ligament damage that typically does not require surgical intervention. While the injury’s exact nature remains unspecified, it could be turf toe—a common and painful condition among athletes that occurs when the big toe is hyperextended.

If this is indeed the case, Edoga’s physical therapy team will be focused on managing his symptoms and ensuring a full recovery while minimizing the risk of re-aggravation. The early phase of recovery will follow the POLICE protocol (Protect, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) to reduce pain and inflammation. Proper footwear will also play a crucial role, as rigid shoes that limit toe joint movement will help offload stress on the injured area.

During this initial recovery period, Edoga will likely refrain from higher-level exercises to allow the ligament damage to heal while protecting the joint. As his symptoms improve, therapy will shift toward restoring joint range of motion, as stiffness in the toe joint can increase stress and the likelihood of re-injury. Additionally, strengthening exercises for the lower leg and foot muscles will be introduced to reduce the load on the toe joint and further support his recovery.

In this video, the 3DPT demonstrates a few exercises that could be incorporated into a rehab program for turf toe.

Early Stage: Resisted Plantar flexion with Big Toe Flexion

Late Stage: Eccentric squat on toes

Return to Sport: Resisted Running

The Cowboys’ early exit from the postseason may be disappointing, but it provides Edoga with the necessary time to focus on his rehabilitation. With the help of his dedicated PT team, he’ll work to return to full strength and be ready for the next NFL season.
