Brody

At 3 Dimensional Physical Therapy, we have the privilege of working with patients of all ages and activity levels. While meniscus injuries are something our team treats regularly, it is far less common to see this type of injury in someone as young as 12 years old.

Brody, a patient at 3DPT Deptford, faced exactly that challenge. After tearing his meniscus at a young age, he worked hard to try to manage the injury conservatively. Unfortunately, it did not heal the way his physician had hoped, and surgery became the next step to ensure a full recovery.

Meniscus tears are typically more common in older athletes and adults due to wear and tear over time. In younger patients, the meniscus has a stronger blood supply and more resilient cartilage, which helps protect against injury and improves healing potential.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, meniscal injuries in children are less frequent and are usually the result of a specific traumatic event rather than gradual degeneration. Research from the National Institutes of Health also supports that pediatric meniscus tears are relatively uncommon, making cases like Brody’s unique and requiring careful, structured rehabilitation.

From the start, Brody understood what was ahead. Returning to the soccer field would not happen overnight. It would take time, effort, and a strong commitment to the rehabilitation process, and that is exactly what he gave. Dr. Zach Friedman watched as Brody stood out, especially post-surgery. His focus, consistency, and positive attitude were evident in every session. He showed up ready to work, gave 100% each day, and fully embraced the process. Not only was he dedicated to getting better, but he also genuinely enjoyed the journey along the way.

Now 13 years old, Brody is back on the soccer field and performing at a high level. His hard work throughout rehab has paid off, and he has returned stronger, more confident, and ready to compete.

Brody shared that his commitment to rehab, combined with a clear vision of getting back on the soccer field, was what drove him every step of the way:

1. Tell us about what brought you to physical therapy and how this has affected your life.

I was brought to physical therapy after suffering a meniscus tear during a soccer game. After that, I had surgery, and I started going to 3DPT. Between the time of my injury and being cleared to play sports, I had to be pretty much inactive. That was hard for me because almost everything I love to do is active.

2. Tell us a little about your recovery process. What has been the hardest part of your therapy? What was your favorite part of physical therapy?

My recovery process has felt very long, but going to PT and working with Zach is always a bright spot in my week. Sometimes it is hard and not fun, but I know that the exercises I’m doing will get me back to 100% quicker. My favorite part of PT is finishing after a very hard session, knowing that Zach has pushed me hard.

3. What advice would you give to other people going through the same situation?

Not being able to do active stuff is really hard, but working hard and persevering pays off, and eventually you will be back to what you know and love.

4. Share a fun fact, bucket list item, or goal you want to reach!

I’m one of five brothers, and my favorite food is sushi!
