Just like Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy (OT) helps people perform at their best, however OT focuses more on improving fine and gross motor skills needed for everyday tasks. Some Occupational Therapists obtain advanced training to become Certified Hand Therapists. These OT’s specialize in helping patients gain optimal function and mobility that may be affected by:

Our new Occupational Therapy service is led by Sasha Joseph, OTR/L, CHT, a Certified Hand Therapist specializing in upper extremity rehab. Sasha brings her CHT experience and expert care to help patients regain strength and function. Sasha grew up learning Indian dance that was heavily focused on intricate hand and arm motion. This drew her to the hand therapy field as she could imagine how each hand to shoulder diagnosis could have an effect on day to day life, leisure passions and work tasks.
Here’s what she says about her career as an Occupational and Hand Therapist and her future at 3DPT!
My interest in the OT profession began in my senior year of high school. I wanted to pursue a healthcare career and was exploring different options. I felt the OT profession tied together my academic and personal interests the best with its deep tie between art and science. I spent my college years preparing for this career path. It was during my freshman year of college, that I was first introduced to hand therapy. I shadowed a certified hand therapist (CHT) and was highly interested in the variety and intricacies of hand to shoulder diagnosis and treatment methods. I also enjoyed the process of fabricating custom made splints. From then, it became my professional goal to specialize in upper extremity therapy.
When I graduated OT school, I started off with working in the skilled nursing facility for two years. This has built a deeper understanding of comorbidities and other factors that influence and affect upper extremity orthopedic care as well. In 2020, I received the opportunity to receive on-site mentorship and work in the hand therapy field full-time. After four years of working in outpatient hand therapy, I passed my hand therapy certification exam in the fall of 2024.
I feel honored to work in this amazing profession. I still become incredibly happy watching patients achieve every small to big milestone. These achievements range from anything between forming a fist to grasp eating utensils, buttoning a shirt, being able to tie and style hair, or being able to pick up their child again. We use our arms and hands daily to participate in our activities and it’s a huge impact on our quality of life when we are not able to participate in tasks as we used to.
I am excited to be joining the 3DPT team and provide upper extremity care to the community! I’m looking forward to meeting and working with each patient that enters our clinic. While therapy can be a difficult journey, my goal is to ease the process with compassion, warmth and the occasional smile or laugh.
