3DPT - Pediatric Physical Therapy

Physical therapists have a strong knowledge base of anatomy and movement. They perform assessments to recognize dysfunctions in almost every system of the body and provide interventions to promote optimal physical function and health. Often times, physical therapists will specialize in a specific area of physical therapy (for example, Orthopedics, Neuro, Pediatrics). Pediatric physical therapists specialize in working with children – newborns to young adults, and everything in between. In the pediatric setting, physical therapists use clinical reasoning and evidence based practice to improve independence, facilitate motor and developmental skills, increase strength and flexibility, improve endurance and fitness, and increase participation in age appropriate gross motor activities. Pediatric physical therapists collaborate closely with families to develop individualized treatment programs centered around the wants and needs of the child.

Don't Let Your Achilles Tendon Become Your Achilles Heel

Are you running a 5k, 10K, marathon or any other race this season? This month we would like to take the time to highlight one of our patients that we will call Bob. Bob, who has run several 5ks, 10ks, and half marathons, decided to step up his training and go for the full marathon this fall. He increased his weekly mileage and intensity of his training to prepare for the longer race. A few weeks into the program, Bob noticed a dull pain above his right heel while running. It did not hurt during the rest of his daily activities, so he decided to continue training, hoping the pain would just go away. A few weeks later, the pain became more intense and hurt during the first few steps each morning. Dejected, Bob started icing the heel, taking Advil, and reluctantly took a week off from running. After a week of rest, he went for a run and, within a few hundred meters, the familiar pain in the heel returned.

Concussion Team Management

Concussions are a very hot topic right now between the legislatures passed in the state of New Jersey to the settlement reached in the NFL. More and more people are being injured and more and more athletes are missing playing time because of this serious brain injury. The best approach to managing a concussion involves the injured person and their family, coaches, athletic trainers, physicians, and physical therapists all on the same team to progress to a full return to sports, work, or whatever activity they were doing prior to the injury.

Stressed about Stress Fractures?

Most bone fractures occur as a result of traumatic or violent injury, but this is not true of all fractures. In fact, most of us have heard about stress fractures, but they remain a mystery to many. Like the majority of running injuries (tendonosis, fasciitis, and, shin splints) stress fractures are overuse injuries. Similar to muscle, bone breaks down and builds up in response to the stresses of exercise. Stress fractures occur when the bone breakdown happens more quickly than the body's ability to rebuild. Due to several factors, the body may not produce sufficient bone and as a result, micro cracks, called "stress fractures," can occur in the bone.

It’s Getting Hot in Here

The dog days of summer are officially upon us. As it gets hotter and hotter outside, our bodies have to work harder and harder to keep our internal temperature cool while we work in the yard or play a sport. The average internal body temperature is between 97.7 and 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit. To maintain this temperature range, the body circulates additional blood and promotes sweating. During exercise, the body produces heat, as our muscles contract, and elevates the heart rate to promote blood circulation. When exercising in hotter temperatures, the heart has to pump harder to circulate blood both for temperature control as well as to help with muscle activation. Sweat, which is made up of water and electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, and chloride), cools the body by using heat energy to evaporate. At times when the humidity is about 50% or higher (which feels like just about every day in New Jersey), this evaporation does not happen as regularly which slightly negates the cooling.

The Dirt on Gardening Injuries

With the summer months comes an increase in various activities, such as yard work, that can cause new pains or aggravate old recurring injuries. Lower back pain, caused by a herniated disk, stenosis, or muscle aches can make gardening a tough chore. Those with back pain often shy away from these activities or try to work through the pain.

Learning how to stand, move, and work in ways that will decrease stress around the lumbar spine will help to reduce the risk of aggravating your low back pain. When walking try to maintain a slight arch in the lower back while keeping your abs tight, and don't slouch. Use correct postures when doing garden chores such as raking, shoveling, hoeing, etc.

Golf Warm-Up: How to Get Loose Early

The game of golf is not only mentally challenging but can also be physically taxing as well. While common activities such as driving, walking, and computer work all occur directly in front of us, golf requires our bodies to rotate many (and depending on your handicap, very many) times. Stretching or warming up before an athletic activity can reduce the risk of injury and improve performance.

YOU: Running

If you are reading this, you most likely have some level of interest in running. Maybe you run every day, maybe you run a few days each week, or maybe you used to run but because of pain or injury you no longer are able to run. More and more people of all ages have been caught up in the "running boom", as evidenced by the statistics below:

Vestibular Rehabilitation

The vestibular system is made up of 3 canals of fluid located within the ears. When you move, the fluid in these canals moves, as well, and sensors along the canal can determine movement speed and direction. Any problems with the canals or sensors can create balance problems, dizziness, and/or vertigo.

A 3 Dimensional World

We have all done it. We go to the gym and get on the leg extension machine to work our quads. Or we do abdominal crunches on the floor in our house to make our "core" stronger. Even though we do these things with good intentions, performing these exercises that lock us into one plane of movement is not how our bodies function in real life. It is important to understand that every muscle, bone and joint in our body moves and functions in 3 dimensions, or planes.

Direct Access and Physical Therapy

Research has proven that the sooner an injury is treated, the faster the recovery process. All too often I see patients in the clinic who have been suffering with an injury for too long due to the sometimes lengthy process of negotiating the health care system. By the time that patient gets to my office for treatment, they have lost valuable time that they could have been receiving proper treatment and are now considered "behind" in the rehabilitation process.

To Play or Not to Play

Each and every day, athletes of all levels and abilities get injured practicing or competing in sports which they love. These athletes have to go through recovery and rehabilitation from the injury prior to returning to sport. Since every athlete wants to be back on the field competing as soon as possible, it is up to the medical professionals to determine when it is appropriate to return to sport.
